Renovations of 17 Railway
St

This house is one of a unique group of the last
standing 5 Queenslanders in a row in Southport. They were built
in the early 1920's after council subdivided the land in 1921.
4 of the Queenslanders have exactly the same floor
layout, and have 6 inch knotty hoop pine floor boards, tongue
and groove single layer walls, 12 foot ceilings also made of
tongue and groove, and antique 'star burst' glass in some windows
and french doors.
17 Railway St was in fairly good condition, considering
she is over 85 yrs old and has survived wet rot, termites and
a few cyclones. Ear marked for demolition, 'St Ives' was the
worst looking house in the street. With a little tender loving
care, perseverance, and hard work, this old rambling house
was transformed, thus preserving the historic streetscape and
buildings of this era.
